The Metaverse is a persistent online digital world.
There is no agreed definition of what a metaverse is. There are many definitions, and many are speculative about technology that is still being developed. Generally, people agree that a metaverse is an online digital world populated with other users. Each user has a unique digital representation called an 'avatar'. Users use their avatars to interact with the metaverse and with other users. The goal is often to provide an experience that is as immersive as possible. This means that the goal is to make users feel like they are actually in the digital world, also known as the feeling of 'presence'.
Most definitions agree that the key characteristic of a metaverse is its interactivity. The interactive elements are more important than the graphical quality of the experience. However, the graphics are still an important aspect of the metaverse, and advancements in technology are constantly improving these. Some people believe that interactive and social elements are so important that the term 'metaverse' shouldn't be applied to any virtual world that lacks these features. For example, the 1982 video game 'Adventure' is sometimes described as the first metaverse, but it lacks the persistent world and interactivity of more modern virtual worlds, so some people think it should be excluded.
There is also debate as to whether a metaverse can exist on a single device. Some people believe that a metaverse must be decentralized and exist across multiple computers. This is also called a 'decentralized' metaverse. Other people accept that a metaverse can exist on a single device, also called a 'centralized' metaverse. The decentralized version of the metaverse is supposed to create more equity amongst users and prevent monopolies, as control and ownership of the various aspects of the metaverse are spread across many stakeholders.
Currently, there are many metaverses. Each metaverse has its own distinct focus, providing unique experiences to users. Most are centered around interactive games, but they can also provide social connections, education, and other experiences.
It is still unclear which metaverses will dominate in the future or whether multiple metaverses can coexist. There are many promising metaverses, however, many of them are still under development. Some technology and gaming companies are currently developing their own metaverses but, like the World Wide Web, a single dominant metaverse probably won't emerge overnight.
It is also difficult to predict how the metaverse will be used in the future. Some people see the metaverse as a mainly recreational tool, providing new opportunities for entertainment through gaming and socializing. Others see the metaverse as having more practical benefits, like improving work communication and collaboration, providing new ways to learn and educate, and even reshaping the way we live our lives.
This later group believes that the line between physical and digital reality is already blurred, and that this blurring will only increase in the future until they
The Supreme Court recently declined to hear a case, Mckesson v. Doe , that could have affirmed that the First Amendment protects protest organizers from being held liable for illegal actions committed by others present that organizers did not direct or intend. The high court’s decision to not hear the case at this time left in place an opinion by the Fifth Circuit, which covers Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, that said a protest organizer could be liable for the independent, violent actions of others based on nothing more than a showing of negligence. Across the country, many people have expressed concern about how the Supreme Court’s decision not to review, or hear, the case at this stage could impact the right to protest. The ACLU, which asked the court to take up the case, breaks down what the court’s denial of review means. What Happened in Mckesson v. Doe? The case, Mckesson v. Doe , was brought by a police officer against DeRay Mckesson , a prominent civil rights activi...
